 She was a mythical queen of the mythical island of California. That myth began around the early 1500s when Montalvo wrote about her in his novel “Romance.” His book was the first Spanish prose circular ever produced. She was a bored queen who wanted to go and fight the Christians and get praise and attention and possess riches and slaves. During the 1500s, Cortez and other Spanish mariners were fans of Montalvo’s books and took them on the first voyages to American.
